PUBLISHED MONTHLY BY THE BAILEY HIGH SCHOOL Volume III BAILEY, N. C., DECEMBER, 18, 1928 No. 2 Third P. T. A. Meeting Held on Thursday Last McLEAN SPEAKS The Parent-Teacher Association of Bailey met Thursday evening, De cember 13. As the president was absent, Mrs. J. P. Underwood pre sided. At the request of the pro gram committee, Mr. J. E. McLean of Spring Hope spoke to the associa tion. After the talk games, partici pated in by all parents, were con ducted. The principal of Spring Hope School, Mr. J. E. McLean, gave to parents and teachers of Bailey at their regular monthly meeting, Thursday evening, an inspirational talk stressing the importance of libraries, and more libraries, and urging the cooperation of parents and teachers. At the same time he explained the grade mother idea which has been the source of much educational success in Spring Hope, and which Bailey school plans to adopt. At the completion of the program, games, conducted by Miss Myrtle Lee Caudill, amused the members of the association. Among the more en tertaining ones were a hand shaking contest featuring paper bags, a con test in the art of relay 'drawing, a Grin contest in which Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Underwood were declared to be possessed of the broadest grins, and a mysterious mind-reading exhibi tion afforded by Miss Ha Mae Bost. The next meeting, of course, is to be the second Thursday night in January. Parents Go! You’ll be glad you did. President Calls P. T. A. Executive Council At the first meeting of the parent- teacher association this term several objectives for the year were agreed upon. To all outward appearances however, they have sunk into the background and place was given to speeches and immediate business. 'With this fact in mind, Mrs. E. C. Griffin, Parent-Teacher president, called a meeting of what she chose to term “the executives” on Monday night. At this meeting, the following ob jectives were rediscussed and re established: that the association should endeavor to increase number of books in the library; that it should do as much as possible towards plant ing shrubbery and trees for the im provement of the school lawn; and that the children are destined to have playground equipment. In the United States there has been functioning for several years a successful National Parent-Teachers Association. North Carolina has a state association which is a chapter of the National Organization. Shall the Bailey Parent-Teacher affiliate with those of the nation? The ex ecutives think so. What do Grade Mothers do? Are they a success? These questions were discussed and the verdict announced that Bailey School needs Grade Mothers and that Mr. McLean of Spring Hope School would be consulted concerning their duties and privileges. It is to be hoped that the execu tives meet again because Mrs. Grif fin serves hot chocolate. Science Club Begun in Bailey High Owing to the interest shown in science and physical geography by the students, it was thought advisable to organize a club in which the inter est could be used to some purpose, and where the curiosity could be satisfied. November 16 saw the realization of the project. Officers were elected: James A. Glover, pres ident; Walter Roberson, vice presi dent; Inez Bissette, secretary and treasurer. A committee of three was appointed to serve as a program planning committee. On November 23 the club met and the entire student body was present. Each person was wearing a smile not because he was planning a picnic, but because he was anxious to see Bailey High School progress. An interesting and educational program was given. The club has met only twice; the officials are pleased with the progress and enthusiasm that has been shown by the members. Af ter the holidays the club is looking forward to the achievement of sev eral projects in science. French Class Close Contest. Blues Win’ Jennie Mac Club On December 7 the Jennie Mac Club girls had their regular monthly meeting. After an interesting pro gram and more interesting refresh ments, officers for the new term were elected. The list has been post ed as follows: Willie Iris Perry—President. Minnie Belle Pinch—V. President Beatrice Strickland—Secretary. Mozelle Pinch—Reporter. BAILEY STUDENTS HAVE XMAS TREES Next Priday Holidays begin. Every student is living for that day and nothing more. Rumor says that part of that big reason is that Christ mas trees and presents are being planned. It is customary to have festal trees in Bailey school, one for high school, one for grammar grades, one for primary grades. Unless something unlooked for happens every child will receive a Christmas token of the loves of some school mate, since names were drawn in each grade. At the beginning of the school year, the first year Prench class di vided into two groups, the Reds and the Blues. A short vocabulary con test was then given every other day. One from each side went to the board at the command “allez au tableaunoir.” On the blackboard were listed the words for the day’s study. Miss Bost called the Eng lish words; a member of the class kept score. When a word was call ed, the contestants touched the Prench equivalent with their point ers. The competitor who touched the correct word first was given one point. The contest was closed Thursday; the score stood: Blues, 713; Reds 628. The Blues are expecting a funny, snappy entertainment given by the Reds as a penalty for general inability. This is to be staged Pri day, December 21. The Blues are waiting patiently—Perforce.
